Bringing Back Your Business Again
What motivated you to start your business? Freedom from corporate slavery – this is one of the most common answers people give when asked this touchy question. They want to be their own boss. They believe a certain business idea could be their ticket to fortune. They are not just infatuated with these ideas, they are in LOVE, a state of romantic bliss. You were probably brimming with mirth and so fabulously enchanted with your business when it just started out. It was like the first days of a new romance. The halcyon days, that’s what they were.
You might as well fall in love with your business…again. Think of it like a marriage – you and your business have stuck it out through thick and thin. You’ve burned the midnight oil. You reaped the rewards of your sacrifice. Your love for your business may have seen some tough times, and right now it might be wavering. Ask yourself now, are you in love with your business still or has it just turned into a partner, a faithful companion?
If you answered the latter, here are some suggestions for you to rekindle the flame.
Cool off and give yourself a break. Who knows, maybe that time off is what you need to rekindle your passion. Take a little time off and reconnect with the reasons that you started your business. Reconnect with the excitement you had at the start. Relive the excitement. Go back to the halcyon days in whatever way possible.
Ask yourself what you really love about your business. Some of the work you love, some of it is just plain old work. Remember the good rather than the not-so-good or mundane. Learn to take consolation in what you have. Develop systems to make the hard work easier. If you don’t enjoy some facets of your job, then outsource. Get third party assistance. Only do what is enjoyable, while tasks that are not can be outsourced.
Map out a plan. You may be feeling discombobulated by what’s going on, so you want to plan your escape route out of your state of flux. Grab a pen and paper, go write. Grab your old business plan as well. And as you read the first page, you’ll probably get nostalgic as a younger, more mirthful you wrote all these great things about your business. Having a written plan eases stress and gets you back in charge. You’ll feel powerful with a plan.
Share your excitement. With your new plan and your renewed vision get out there and tell people about it. Just like after your first dates when that’s all you’d talk about, share your enthusiasm. Share the feelings of freedom you enjoy. Spread the love and you’ll find that you would be feeling better about your business, and making other people feel proud of you for keeping the candle of love burning despite of it all.
